Gewicht – Algemene types van Europees erkende eendenrassen
Naast een indeling van eendenrassen aan de hand van het nut wat ze hebben, kunnen we de eendenrassen ook onderverdelen op basis van het gewichtstype. Op onderstaande afbeelding vind je de gedomesticeerde eendenrassen ingedeeld op basis van het gewicht zoals de is opgenomen in de Europese standaard. Deze onderverdeling wordt vervolgens ingedeeld in drie groepen. zwaar, middelzwaar en licht.
Zwaar. Bovenaan de gewichtsladder staat een tweetal redelijk overeenkomstige vleesrassen.
De Engelse Aylesbury eend en de Franse Rouen eend.
Middelzwaar. De grote groep daaronder, tussen de 4 – 2,5 kg, noemen we middelzwaar. De eenden in deze groep kennen grote overeenkomsten qua type en bouw.; het zogenaamde landeendentype. De enige uitzondering is de rechtopstaande Duitse Pekingeend.
Licht. De derde groep, tot 2 kg laat meer variatie laten zien in type, bouw en snavelvorm.
Dwerg. Ook bij eenden komen, net als bij hoenders dwergvormen voor. De bekendste is de Hollandse kwaker als zelfstandig ras. Bij de kuifeend kennen we de dwergkuifeend en bij de Appleyardeend de dwerg Appleyardeend. De Giethoornse eend kan gezien worden als de dwergvorm van de eend van Vorst.
Type zware rassen
Zware rassen eenden, zoals de Rouen en de Aylesbury, kun je herkennen aan hun bijzonder robuuste lichaam. Met een gewicht rond 5 kg kunnen deze eenden niet vliegen. Ze zijn ook duidelijk niet aerodynamisch gebouwd! Hun grote lichaam is duidelijk ontworpen voor vleesproductie, ze hebben een brede borst die doorloopt tot vlak boven de grond. Deze eenden kun je makkelijk samen houden. Het zijn rustige en vriendelijke eenden. De Rouen eend, kun je herkennen aan zijn wilde eend-kleuren, de Aylesbury eend heeft een zuiver wit verenpak en een bleekroze snavel.
Type middelzware rassen
